Fresh Food Initiative
food_basketsThe Fresh Food Initiative is a local food distribution through Barry County United Way and the Food Bank of South Central Michigan that assists families when the food budget gets a little tight.  The only qualifying requirement is that you are in need of a little extra food that week; the doors open at 8:30 a.m.(bring a box to carry an allocation of food) you will need to sign in with your name, zip code and how many people are in your household.  Each household may receive only one allocation of food.  After the truck arrives on site, the food is unloaded, sorted, counted and the distribution begins; we are normally finished by 10:00 a.m.

Another program that is available in Barry County is the Angel Food Ministry program.  For $30 you can pre-order from the monthly “food in a box” menu.  You must pre-order, pre-pay and pick up your box on the last Saturday of the month.  You receive a variety of meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner; each meal is based on a family size of four.  You can access the monthly menu online at www.angelfoodministries.com or call one of the local sites for more information;  Hastings Church of the Nazarene (269) 945-9734 and Gun Lake Community Church (269) 795-7903.

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities associated with these programs, please call Bonnie at the Barry County United Way Volunteer Center, (269) 945-4010, if you have any questions or would like more information on volunteer opportunities in Barry County.
